BenQ DVD writer

Purchased a BenQ DVD writer DW 1620 PRO from newegg recently. Came with firmware version G7Z9. Destroyed several but not all DVD-Rs to begin with and then destroyed all after a few weeks. It would start writing the DVD, then freeze some way through. Turns out that it works better with a different series of firmware, one that is distributed with the retail version of the drive.

Steps for firmware installation (on Windows):
  1. Get WinDWFlash from http://dvdpro.club.st/firmware/BenQ/WinDWFlash.rar
  2. Get the latest .CVT format firmware from http://dvdpro.club.st/firmware/BenQ_FW.htm#DW1620 (I used the B7T9 version)
  3. Run WinDWFlash.exe and install the CVT file. (Running the installer from the manufacturer will not work - it will refuse to install the B7 series firmware).
  4. Download the latest firmware from the BenQ support site (I used B7V9) and install it.
Standard disclaimers apply: You will void your warranty. You may destroy your drive. Etc, etc.
